Let Your Personalities Shine
01/23/2022People are multifaceted, and this includes our varying personalities. Picture a savvy, business-focused man in his 70’s that is always in a full suit at work meetings. Of course, you might assume things about how he conducts himself during a mergers and acquisitions meeting, but is that who he is always? You learn his young granddaughter is his truest treasure and that she loves playing tea party with Pop Pop in full accessories. Does that change your mental picture? By seeing each other in a more humanistic light, we can form relationships based on people rather than roles or function. When we relate more to each other, we are better able to support one another while not feeling the need to edit our true selves as severely.
While there are expectations for behaviors in certain situations, you can still showcase various aspects of who you are—a multidimensional you. When much is unknown about a person, we tend to fill in the gaps with assumptions. These assumptions are frequently incorrect and may not be helpful in making people feel seen and understood. Without needing to divulge confidential information, we can still fill in gaps and present ourselves as a relatable individual rather than a placeholder.
Who Are You? Who Are They?
If your friends know you to be silly and sarcastic with a heart of gold, they learned that from observation. At work however, your coworkers may only know you as the timely and dependable colleague. Might there be a benefit from them additionally knowing your silly side? Your quick mind for sarcasm? Your heart of gold? By letting them observe some of these same behaviors, they can form better working relationships with you and may, in turn, reveal more about themselves too.
Try to find “ice breakers” to help showcase the fuller version of yourself. You may find that by curating a fuller understanding of your multifaceted personalities, you create novel opportunities or networks.
