Breathe Easy

Breathe Easy

We have a plethora of stressors to combat daily, both things that are in our control and things that are not. Many people have feelings of burnout returning to jobs after the holidays and facing work backlogs. People can also become overwhelmed when checking bank account and credit card balances following the holidays. While there isn’t a simple fix to fully address these concerns, there is great way to steady yourself.

Breathe!

While it’s an easy action—we do this all day, everyday—the breath I am referring to is purposeful and deeper than usual breathing patterns. Specifically, diaphragmatic breathing (learn how here) provides feedback to our nervous system that is associated with a “rest and digest” response that promotes relaxation. This is known as the parasympathetic nervous system and is the opposite of the “fight or flight” reaction of the sympathetic nervous system.

Whether stealing a moment during a busy afternoon or scheduling a daily time to practice diaphragmatic breathing, signaling your body to relax will surely help to weather the stresses. Need more ways to destress that are specific to your circumstances? Book a free consult to start.
