Try to Put a Label On It
12/12/2021While it is not applicable advice for all aspects of life, sometimes labeling things can be advantageous. This feels especially true when it comes to anxieties and emotions that might leave us feeling unsettled. If you’ve ever felt a simmering anxiety but can’t quite figure out why you feel this way, try to put a label on it. This could mean naming the issues or the feelings.
The Issues: Regardless of how you are feeling, if you can determine what thing or issue that is the source, you might be one step closer to finding a solution. The answer might be different for each scenario.
The Feelings: Some feelings may *seem* similar at first. Excitement and fear can feel similar as anyone who has watched a scary movie or attempted to sky dive. By taking a moment to determine what you are feeling, it may be easier to adjust your outlook.
How This Works: By knowing your opposition, it’s easier to develop a solution or reach a truce. Taking a moment to determine “the what” allows for transition to understanding why or how it may impact you.
For example, think how you may feel if you have a presentation at work and a higher up will be sitting in to assess your performance. First determine the issue: Are you worried they will question your competence? Are you concerned about public speaking regardless of who is attending? Are you concerned about technical glitches? Is your understanding of the presentation topic superficial and you are concerned about the Q&A section? Once you have identified your issue(s)you can identify the feelings such as worry, unconfident, or underprepared. By labeling issues and feelings, you may be able to find areas to work through and address to improve comfort and calmness.
