Attitude of Gratitude
11/21/2021Before reading on, take a moment to list 5 nice things that you may take for granted. Take note of whether this exercise is easy for you or requires more thought and effort.
Here’s an example list:
- Health — Can you breathe and participate in life? Anyone who has had a transient cold might recognize the wonder of breathing easy.
- A comfortable environment — Electricity for light, running water, temperature control. Imagine how different your day might be without it.
- Connectivity — A phone call, text, or email to easily connect with loved ones. No longer reliant on slow methods.
- The Internet — Such a wealth of information. No longer do we suffer from not being able to name that actor whose name is on the tip of your tongue.
- Access to food — Beyond the grocery store and the options of fresh and prepared food, think of the ease of deciding you don’t have the time or energy to cook and the ease of pickup or delivery options.
When you stop to think of all the things, it can be tremendous. We wouldn’t get anything done if we spent all day thinking about what we are grateful for, so it becomes second nature to take it for granted.
It’s no wonder there are numerous research studies that show gratitude journals to be significantly helpful for feelings of motivation, generosity, and a sense of well-being, among other things.
While there are suggestions that writing a daily journal might be an ideal format, others may find that keeping mental lists, jotting bullets in their phone, or recounting moments aloud in discussion better fits their personal preference.
Try this practice for yourself and see you if you find a difference in your sense of wellbeing. For help with your journey in happiness and satisfaction, consider life coaching to shape the path.
