Understanding Goals with “Why”
09/12/2021Many of us have set goals, even SMART ones, but failed nonetheless. One trick to sticking with a goal is to understand why we set it in the first place. An easy technique to assess the “why” is to pick a goal and then ask yourself the following questions:
- Why do you want that?
- What does it give you?
- And why do you want that? (repeat this question as much as you need)
Once you’ve taken a closer look at the fundamentals of why you want a goal and what it will change for you, try picturing what you might achieve if you reach this goal. Additionally, think of how this attained goal will help you feel. Using the mental image and projected feelings can motivate us in a novel way aside from objective measures such as did you make the score or number.
If we better understand our goals and arm ourselves with well-made SMART goals, we can be better motivated to stay the course even on days that seem too challenging or if we lack the energy. Know the why and see the end result to help you understand, frame, and achieve your goals. Accountability can also be a strong asset with goals. Enlist a friend, join a group, or hire a professional—such as a life coach—to help you maintain your focus on you and your goal(s).
