Own It: A Tip for Believing in Yourself

There are traits we like in ourselves and traits we don’t. When trying to cultivate our identity and how we portray ourselves, there are plenty of tips and trips directed at making habits, prioritizing time, and more. There are so many options that it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here’s a simple, yet effective tip to help you own it and believe you *can* have the identity or trait you desire.

Add “-er”

While “fake it ‘til you make it” can’t cover all bases, there is truth to believing something about yourself while you are still in the process. With this in mind, use the simple trick of adding “-er” to the behavior or trait you are cultivating. For example, if you decided you will floss more often so you can stop finessing (re: lying) to the dentist about your flossing frequency, use the “-er” trick. Instead of saying you will floss daily, call yourself a flosser. By identifying as the “-er” version you will make more decisions that align with a Flosser’s behavior (not to skip it after brushing for “just tonight”). The more decisions made that reflect this identity, the easier it is to believe in and see yourself as this type of person.

Here are some examples of frequent goals with their “-er” versions.

  • planner
  • saver
  • exerciser
  • listener
  • traveler

What is something you are working on and could apply this simple trick? By being able to believe in ourselves, we can better represent this version of ourselves to those we interact with.
